Forest surveying and national forest inventory. What should we know about Russian forests?

 

The RAS Research Board on Forests held academic dispute “Forest surveying and national forest inventory. What should we know about Russian forests?” on November 11, 2015.

The debate aim was to discuss widely the state and challenges of forest inventory in Russia and worldwide. The scientific analysis of the results of the national forest inventory, providing Russian governmental authorities with unbiased information for rational and timely decision making.

Diversity of organizations and participants confirms the timeliness of the topic: almost 60 specialists from FANO RAS institutions, high school, environmental NGOs, private inventory organizations, mass media, etc.

However Ministry of environment and natural resources and Federal Forestry Agency did not send its representatives although were invited.

 

The discussion allowed determine the importance of the following statements:

  • the state forest inventory did not give relevant information about forests, although great amount of money was spent (estimated 4-6 bln rubles).
  • the forest inventory system is depressed.

 

Dispute participants decided to commission the RAS Research Board on Forests to:

  • to develop an expert opinion based on debate participants’ suggestions;
  • send an expert opinion to the Russian Government, Ministry of environment and natural resources, Federal Forestry Agency, NGOs and commercial organizations.
